If you find yourself constantly struggling with skin issues, you may want to detox your skin. Achieving clear and healthy skin is about getting to the root cause of your skin issues, not necessarily covering them up with creams.

One root cause of your skin issues could be toxins. While your body has natural detox systems that eliminate harmful chemicals, sometimes it can't keep up with the toxin overload.

Since your skin is your biggest detox organ, symptoms of overload can include acne, and mysery-based rashes among others.

Understanding common toxic offenders and how to eliminate them are the first steps to detoxifying your skin.

Common Toxic Offenders

  • Personal and household products:Your beauty supplies, hand soaps, shampoos, laundry detergents, fragrance sprays and even candles can expose you to harmful chemicals. When looking at cosmetics alone, the U.S. has only 11 banned chemicals compared to the more than 1,300 chemicals that are banned in the EU. When choosing products, it's important to know that not all items on store shelves were created equally, which is why it's important to read labels and ingredients carefully.

  • Food and environment: Sadly, the majority of our agriculture practices consist of spraying our crops with pesticides. These pesticides stay on the foods when we consume them. They're found on colorful fruits and vegetables as well as in processed foods. The highest concentrations of a popular pesticide, glyphosate, are found in wheat, oats and barley. You may also be exposed to toxins that are lingering in the air, in your water source, on maintained nature trails, golf courses and even your backyard.

  • Pharmaceuticals: Many medications and supplements can be of low quality and can be contaminated with fillers and other unwanted chemicals. If you're buying supplements or medications, be sure to buy from a trusted source.

Tips to Detox Your Skin

After you've taken out the common toxin offenders, it's time to optimize your body's ability to detox to promote overall skin health.

  • Increase hydration: Ensure you're drinking enough water every day since water helps the kidneys and colon eliminate waste. Drink clean water and avoid drinking from plastic water bottles (this can just add to your toxic load). Invest in a high-quality water filter depending on what chemicals are found in your local water source.

  • Enhance daily nutrition: Keep nutrient stores at optimal levels to ensure your body can carry out all its proper functioning. Include whole organic foods as the staple ingredients for your meals. Receive functional lab testing to know exactly which vitamins and minerals you need, whether through diet or supplementation. Alternatively, a Daily Nutritional Support shake can help you get all your nutritional supplements in one meal.

  • Consume cruciferous green vegetables: These foods, such as broccoli, bok choy and cabbage, contain sulforaphane, which is a sulfur-rich compound that has detoxification properties. If you have a hard time getting in your vegetables, a Daily Fruit & Vegetable Blend powder may be a great option to ensure you get those beneficial compounds.

  • Limit inflammatory foods: Processed foods can increase inflammation, stress your liver, disrupt your digestive and detox systems, and can cause skin complexion issues. When you limit the number of stressors on your body, your normal processes (aka detoxification) can function better.

  • Try a mask: A mud mask can help improve skin rashes, like eczema or candida-based rashes. It pulls out impurities from the skin with its ionic properties.

Whatever your skin issues may be, achieving healthy, detoxified skin starts with understanding common toxic offenders and how the food and water you consume can affect your appearance. Taking small steps can make a big difference in maintaining glowing, vibrant skin.
