How to Boost Your Immunity in 3 Basic Steps

When it comes to keeping yourself well, the status of your immune health is paramount. Luckily, there are several simple and natural ways to support a healthy immune response. These proven measures can be divided into 3 basic steps:

Base, Boost and Back-up.

1 Build Your Immunity Base

Proper nutrition is required for all cells to function optimally in the body, including the cells responsible for immunity. Therefore, building a strong base, or foundation, for immune health, is as simple as making sure that your body gets all of the vitamins and nutrients it needs daily to thrive. The best way to do this is to consume a healthy diet full of vegetables and fruits.

Inadequate nutrition, on the other hand, has been proven to impair immune function, making supplementation for nutritional deficiencies essential.

Three vitamins, in particular, have been strongly shown to help support immunity during these times:

  • Vitamin C
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D3

Vitamin C

The role of Vitamin C in immune enhancement has been shown in research to increase natural killer cell activity, lymphocyte proliferation and immune balance. It's also a potent antioxidant, acting to neutralize free radical damage to cells, including DNA, lipids and proteins. As a free radical neutralizing agent, Vitamin C readily donates electrons to unstable molecules and breaks the chain of free radical damage to cells and tissues.

Furthermore, Vitamin C supplementation has been studied for more than six decades for its role in supporting the body during immune challenges. It has been shown to stimulate both the production and function of white blood cells which are essential to immune health.


Zinc affects multiple aspects of immune health. For starters, zinc is crucial for the normal development and function of immune cells. Studies have shown that a protein in the body lures zinc into cells that are the first-responders against infection. Zinc then aids in the process of the body fighting against infection. Research also suggests that zinc helps control infections by balancing the immune response in a way that prevents damaging excess inflammation.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 plays a major role in our human genome (DNA) and is responsible for over 500 processes in the body, including assisting with the absorption of other vitamins and minerals. When the body is low in Vitamin D it immediately lowers the immune response and therefore our defenses against bacteria, viruses and other diseases. In addition to protecting you from bacterial and viral invaders, low levels of Vitamin D could leave you susceptible to autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, diabetes, cancer and more.

3 Support Your Immunity With Back-Up

In addition to building a base for your immune health and boosting it during times of susceptibility, back-up support is ideal for those times when you feel an oncoming issue for a quick, vigorous immune response. Numerous herbs have been shown to help support immunity, especially oregano oil, echinacea and elderberry.

Oregano Oil

Oregano is an herb most commonly known for flavoring dishes. However, when oregano is in its concentrated form as an essential oil, it's loaded with powerful antioxidant properties and other compounds with many proven benefits. It's potentially one of the strongest natural herbs on the planet for broad-spectrum immunity. Studies have shown oregano oil to be effective as a natural immune supporter.


Similarly, echinacea is a herb that is loaded with active compounds that function as antioxidants. Studies have shown the benefits of echinacea to reduce inflammation, improve immunity, and more. Research also shows that it increases the number of white blood cells, which fight infections. Furthermore, research has specifically shown echinacea to be beneficial in decreasing the incidence and duration of the common cold.


Elderberry (also known as black elderberry or sambucol) is a plant that produces flowers and fruits which are also packed with antioxidants and vitamins shown to support immune health. Specifically, studies have shown elderberry to be beneficial to immune activation and in the inflammatory response.

Additional Tips for Immunity

Whether or not your immunity is optimal, everyone should seek to support their immune health. Likewise, you don't have to (and shouldn't) wait until you're already sick to focus on boosting your immunity — In other words, don't wait to prepare for the worst! Remember, a healthy immune system reduces your chance of sickness from the common cold to a viral infection.

Here are several preventive measures you can take every day to optimize your body's defense against infection and illness:

  • Practice proper hygiene, such as hand washing.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet full of vegetables and fruits.
  • Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes per day.
  • Get an adequate amount of sleep, aim for 8+ hours.
  • Reduce stress, practicing meditation and yoga have been shown to help.
  • Increase sunlight exposure to support the production of Vitamin D in the body, at least 10-15 minutes.
  • Fill nutritional deficiencies with supplements.

During these times, I urge you to take the extra steps to ensure your immune system is strong and healthy.
