Growth Hormone (IGF-1) Test

Insulin-Like Growth Factor or (IGF-1) is a hormone present in both men and women. Produced in the liver, IGF levels peak during puberty. As a growth hormone, it helps the body to create muscles and create bone tissue, helping keep your body strong and healthy. As an insulin-like compound, it also plays a role in regulating blood sugar, weight, and metabolism. As the body ages, IGF levels decline naturally over time. IGF is important for regular aging, but can be affected by countless stressors. The presence of cortisol, as well as thyroxine and sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen all have an impact on IGF levels. If you have been experiencing low mood, fatigue, bone loss, or reduced exercise tolerance testing your IGF levels can provide valuable information.

What is Measured

IGF-1

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), somatomedin C, is a hormone similar in molecular structure to insulin.

Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 or IGF-1 helps the body to regulate another hormone simply called growth hormone or GH. While levels of GH can fluctuate wildly throughout the day depending on your diet, exercise, and activity level, the amount of IGF-1 in your body remains constant. Testing IGF-1 levels can shine a light on overall hormonal balance.

Due to its stable and easily measurable nature, IGF-1 is an excellent marker to examine your health, no matter what age.
